Why Whoosh? You may be asking why my school is called Whoosh Swim School? The name was inspired by my coach Ian Armiger when I was training for the Olympics. It was his trademark: before a race or a training session, after a competition or a text message and an email he would always say “Whoosh!” It was his motivational way of saying “Well done, you did great!” Ian Armiger is a great coach and I learnt a lot from him. I now want to instil some of his ethics and knowledge into my training and teaching to produce excellent swimmers for the future. Thanks Ian, Whoosh!!! Why did I set up Whoosh! Swim School? Having been involved in swimming for over 20 years, I’ve seen first hand some of the fantastic ways in which swimming can improve the lives of adults and children alike. By establishing Whoosh! I feel as though I now have the opportunity to pass on these experiences to others. Why should you come to whoosh! swim school? Not only is swimming a really fun hobby and a great way to relax, it also has the benefit of being extremely good for you. One of the key reasons why I set up Whoosh! is to try and help tackle the growing child obesity problem and promote a healthier lifestyle for kids that’s fun as well as healthy. Swimming is scientifically proven to be one of the best ways to improve your fitness and lose weight, and crucially it is a low impact form of exercise. This means that it places less stress on the bones and joints, whilst still giving maximum health benefits. By getting children involved with swimming from an early age, they lessen their chances of becoming overweight later on in life and are given the skills to stay healthy for the rest of their lives. Aside from the health aspects, there are many other benefits that swimming can offer. Of course, the ability to swim in itself is a crucial life skill that everybody should learn. Even if you don’t plan on becoming a professional swimmer, you never know when being able to swim could be vitally important in your own life or in helping to save the life of another. At Whoosh! I promote water as a joyous and fun thing, however I also cement into our pupils a respect for water and the importance of safety whilst in the water. On top of teaching water safety, Whoosh! can also help teach children other important skills. Being part of my classes is a great way to make friends and meet others with similar interests. On top of this, swimming is a great way for parents to bond with their children and for parents to get to know each other a little better. As a mother myself, I not only know how important fun types of exercise are for children, but also how beneficial socialising and forming new friendships can be. Lastly, a personal reason I decided to start up Whoosh! is the opportunity for me to pass on my many years of experience in competitive swimming and the knowledge I’ve gained to the younger generations. I know there are plenty of really talented swimmers in this part of the country and I want to be at the forefront in helping them reach their maximum potential. Few other swim schools can offer the kind of expertise that Whoosh! can and I genuinely believe we can raise the standards of swimming in our local area and contribute towards creating the next set of successful athletes for the future.
